Minimum Wage in Washington, DC

There are many different local and federal laws that were established to protect employees within Washington DC. Perhaps the most significant of these is the federal law known as the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). According to the FLSA, employers must at least pay the national minimum wage, which comes to be $7.25 per hour.

However, depending on your state or district, you may be mandated to receive a higher rate. This fortunate scenario applies to workers in DC, since the DC Fair Shot Minimum Wage Amendment Act which had been established in 2016 had stated that the rate would rise each year. As of July 1, 2020, the minimum rate for any worker within the District of Columbia has now been raised to $15.00 per hour, no matter the size of the company or business. Moreover, for tipped employees, the increase has caused the base minimum wage to be $5.00 an hour.
