3 myths about workplace harassment

Sexual harassment in the workplace is quite common. But when faced with this type of conduct at work, many people do not know how to react.

Sometimes, this happens because of common and widespread myths about sexual harassment.

Here are three of those myths:

  • Sexual harassment only happens to females: According to Edison Research, 27 percent of women and 14 percent of men have experienced workplace sexual harassment. While more women report having experienced sexual harassment at work, it can and does happen to men as well.
  • Sexual harassment has to involve touching: Sexual harassment can include inappropriate touching at work. But there are many examples of non-physical conduct that can be considered sexual harassment, such as name calling, telling inappropriate jokes, making lewd comments, sending inappropriate emails or instant messages, etc.
  • Ignoring sexual harassment will make it go away: Some victims of sexual harassment at work may take a wait-and-see approach to what they are experiencing. Many ignore the conduct as best they can, but this rarely does anything to stop the aggressor. Sexual harassment is about power and control.

Why are sexual harassment myths harmful? Because they can prevent people from getting the help they deserve.

Sexual harassment in the workplace is illegal and should never happen. Unfortunately, employees across and Texas and the United States are subjected to this behavior.
