Should I hire a lawyer for my employment law issue?

questioning.jpeg

At some point in your life, you may need the services of a lawyer. If you are involved in a disagreement or dispute with your employer or are dealing with mistreatment in the workplace, an attorney can educate you about your rights and help guide you to the best possible solution.

Why do I need a lawyer?

Your job is more than a location you show up to each day. For many, their jobs define who they are in this world. Their work gives them a sense of purpose, and provides them with confidence and feelings of self-worth. Oh, and it probably helps them meet their financial obligations.

If your work conditions or a work-related event disrupts your continued employment or enjoyment of your job, it can throw the rest of your life off balance. If you are the victim of illegal or wrongful treatment at work, learn what type of help is available. Don't take chances with your livelihood.

Can an attorney help me with my workplace issue?

There are many situations that may require the assistance of an employment law professional. Illegal actions taken by an employer or allowed in the workplace include:

  • Discrimination: Discrimination based on age, gender, race, sexual orientation, pregnancy and other factors
  • Retaliation: A reprimand, demotion or work for whistleblowing, placing a workers' compensation claim, taking FMLA leave, etc.
  • Harassment: Unwanted sexual advances from anyone in the workplace
  • Wage and hour matters: Nonpayment of overtime and misclassification as an independent contractor or a salaried employee

Also, before signing on the dotted line, have an attorney draft, review or help you negotiate your employment, non-compete or severance agreement.

Even if you are not sure if a lawyer can help you, it is best to be certain than to spend years wondering if there was something you could have done.
