Employees generally understand that they are supposed to be paid for the work they do. However, holding employers accountable for wage and hour violations can be tricky, especially if the employer commits a violation and tries to hide it.

Wage and hour violations come in many forms.
Be aware that many employers will try to justify wage violations or misinform you about what is considered illegal.
Violations that an employer may try to cover up or otherwise get away with include:
- Failure to pay earned and due wages, including sales commission
- Failure to pay nonexempt employees overtime pay (1.5 times the regular pay rate) for each hour worked over 40 in a week
- Failure to pay employees for on-the-clock training time
- Forcing employees to work through meal times or breaks
- Misclassification of employees as exempt versus nonexempt
- Misclassification of employees as independent contractors
- Failure to pay the minimum wage of $7.25 an hour
- An employer using a tip pool to pay non-tipped workers
- Failure of a restaurant to pay overtime wages when an employee works more than 40 hours in a week at two separate locations owned by the same employer
- Deducting money from employees' paychecks to cover the cost of company-supplied uniforms
