No matter the industry, all employees deserve to work in a safe and respectful environment. A sexual harassment-related suit was recently filed against a bureau of narcotics in another state. However, it has been settled for a total of $25,000. If a person in Texas suffers sexual harassment in the workplace, he or she has the right to take legal action against his or her company.
In the recent out-of-state case, a woman who worked for the narcotics bureau filed a suit against the bureau as well as the bureau's deputy director in September of last year. The bureau is a part of the state's public safety department. The settlement agreement between the woman and the bureau, which was reached in June of this year, was made public on a recent Thursday following a judge's approval of a motion by the bureau to unseal the agreement's information.
The sexual harassment lawsuit accused the bureau of retaliation as well as sex discrimination and sex harassment. The plaintiff claimed that even though she had a strong work record and her level of responsibility increased, she was not given more than the minimum salary. In addition, she was exposed to sexual propositions by the bureau deputy director, along with sexual comments and dirty jokes. The woman who filed the lawsuit is currently employed with a law enforcement agency.
When a company in Texas allows an environment to become hostile due to sexual harassment, it may be held liable in the civil court system. A person who is sexually harassed at work has the right to file a claim against his or her employer. A successful claim may lead to the reinstatement of a job or monetary relief depending on the circumstances surrounding the case.
