Workplace Discrimination Often Leads to Stress

Over half of adults in the United States, including in Texas, are experiencing extreme stress due to unjust treatment or discrimination, based on recent research. Workplace discrimination has been shown to deteriorate an individual's physical health, as well as his or her psychological health. Discrimination can come in the form of harassment, being passed over for promotions, being disrespected, or being fired.

Black adults in the recent survey were the most likely to report discrimination in the form of disrespectful treatment in the workplace. Many of the survey participants believed that race was the biggest reason for their experiencing discrimination. However, people who are discriminated against on the basis of sexual orientation, gender, disability, ethnicity, or age are also said to experience stress as a result.

In the survey, not only black adults but also women, Asians, and Hispanics, as well as transgender individuals, lesbians, gays, and disabled people, said their stress levels have increased overall since 2015. The respondents said they have to be very careful about their behaviors and appearances to avoid becoming targets of discrimination. The stress caused by the discrimination they reportedly faced can lead to health problems, such as irregular heartbeat, heart disease, and high blood pressure.

Discrimination on the basis of protected characteristics, such as race or sex, is illegal in the United States. If a person feels that he or she is a victim of workplace discrimination in Texas, he or she has the right to file a workplace discrimination lawsuit. A successful outcome may include the coverage of any out-of-pocket expenses tied to the claim and possibly compensation for emotional harm, including the loss of the enjoyment of life.
