Most larger companies do their best to be compliant with state and federal wage-and-hour laws. When individuals, especially those in power or those who are famous, hire employees, they may not believe that they are held to the same laws and may, as a result, fail to pay their workers appropriately. Such actions could lead to Texas workers accusing them of violating of wage-and-hour laws, as well as accusing them of a failure to pay overtime.
Pop singer Mariah Carey and her soon-to-be ex-husband, Nick Cannon, are being accused of not paying overtime to their former nanny. The woman worked for the couple for approximately three months and was responsible for the care of their twins. She even lived with the couple on occasion and would travel with them on trips around the world.
The plaintiff claims that she was not paid overtime when she worked over 40 hours per week. She asserts that she was not given rest and meal periods because she was on call 24 hours a day to attend to the singer's needs. According to her complaint, there were weeks that she was required to work over 100 hours without proper compensation.
The woman was ultimately fired because she was reportedly too affectionate toward Carey's children. Carey said in an interview that she is quick to fire employees if they try to make themselves more important than her in the minds of her children. The nanny is accusing the defendants of a failure to pay overtime and seeks monetary damages, legal fees and other just financial compensation. Texas employees who find themselves in similar situations may choose to pursue claims against their employers in an effort to be awarded the compensation to which they believe they are entitled.
