Mariah Carey Accused of Wage and Hour Law Violations by Worker

Although celebrities may be among the rich and famous, they are not above abiding by the law. Workers who serve the stars in Texas and across the country are entitled to be paid according to federal and state laws, just like any other employees. Unfortunately, many famous people violate wage and hour laws, possibly believing that they can get away with it, and the disgruntled employees may choose to turn to the courts to pursue claims for lost wages.

Pop diva Mariah Carey is being accused by one of her former employees of not paying her appropriately. The plaintiff worked as a personal assistant to the musician. Some of her duties including taking care of her home and scheduling the maintenance, preparing items for her trips, and traveling with her to take care of her personal errands. She was also responsible for looking after her family and friends.

The woman claims that she worked seven days per week, with 16-hour shifts. She alleges that she was not compensated for any of the overtime that she worked. The plaintiff also asserts that she was not given her breaks to be able to eat. After seven years of employment, the woman stopped working for Carey, citing her working conditions. The plaintiff is suing Carey for an undisclosed amount of damages.

Workers in Texas who find themselves in similar situations may first choose to confront their employers about the possible wage and hour laws violations. If an agreeable resolution is not reached, the workers may choose to file civil complaints seeking reimbursement for monetary damages. In successfully navigated cases, the claimants may be awarded their lost wages and other financial damages as determined by the individual circumstances of the case.
