A staffing firm with a location in Texas recently agreed to pay just under $2 million to settle claims that it improperly withheld wages from more than 2,000 employees.
The company, Hutco Inc., is based in Lafayette, Louisiana, and has an office in Houston. It provides staffing services for companies in the industrial, manufacturing, and oil and gas fields.
The Department of Labor had alleged that it had found "systematic overtime violations" in how Hutco compensated 2,267 workers. It claimed that Hutch had used "evasive practices" that sought to "undermine labor laws" and "deprive" workers of the money they have earned.
Neither the Department of Labor nor Hutco has gone into detail about what exactly Hutco did to run afoul of wage and hour laws. Hutch was quick to issue a news release, however, clarifying that the settlement it agreed to is not an admission of wrongdoing.
Situations like this, in which a great many workers get the money that is rightfully owed to them, are very cheering. However, they do make one wonder how many other similar cases simply have not been discovered.
Sometimes, people do not know that their employer is violating employment laws. Other times, they have a feeling something is wrong but do not know what to do about it.
