Sexual harassment issues can be difficult for victims to handle in Texas, particularly when they occur at the workplace. Sexual harassment has many forms, including unwanted advances from a supervisor or a request for a sexual favor. In one out-of-state case, more than 30 female corrections officers have sued a county, claiming that they have suffered sexual harassment on the job.
The harassment lawsuit involves a total of 31 women. According to the suit, the county has not done anything to prevent inmates from constantly exposing themselves to the women. The inmates are also said to have made lewd comments while the women were working nearby.
According to the complaint, the harassment practice is called "gunning" among the inmates. As part of the lawsuit, the plaintiffs are seeking an unspecified amount in damages. They are also seeking an order from a judge to stop the harassment. The attorney for the 31 women said similar cases had occurred in other counties and had resulted in hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage awards for plaintiffs.
Employers in the state of Texas legally cannot sexually harass employees, and they also must prevent a hostile work environment -- one in which employees feel that their work lives are unbearable. If they fail to do this, they may be held liable through the civil court system. Employees who are victims of sexual harassment may file lawsuits against the employers allegedly responsible for the harassment, seeking damages. Through proper legal guidance, they may receive advice on the most effective ways in which to proceed with their claims.
