Texas hospital sued by former worker for racial discrimination

Racism is generally not tolerated in any workplace. When an employee feels that he or she is being targeted at work because of race, it may create a hostile and distressing work situation. That seems to be the case for a former maintenance worker at a Texas medical center. He is now suing his former employer, claiming that he was subjected to racial discrimination and retaliation because of his interracial marriage.

The man, who is black, is married to a white woman. He claims that his supervisor began harassing him after meeting his wife, making numerous racist remarks among other forms of discrimination. In Aug. 2012, the plaintiff left work early after telling a house supervisor that he felt unsafe there.

According to the suit, he was terminated a couple weeks later for this unauthorized time off. The suit names his former employer, Paris Regional Medical Center, as well as Regionalcare Hospital Partners as the defendants. He is asking for an unspecified amount of compensation to cover back pay, future earnings, legal fees, court costs, emotional distress and damages.

Workplaces in Texas and elsewhere have an obligation to ensure that employees at all levels feel safe from discrimination and other hostile acts while they're on the job. Any worker who feels that he or she is being singled out for harassment may wish to speak to someone about what options can be taken within the confines of our state's employment laws. Pursuing a claim may help an employee overcome the emotional trauma associated with his or her workplace as well as serve as a punitive measure against the employer.
