Celine Dion's former employee files wage-and-hour lawsuit against star

Welcome to our employment law blog. We hope that readers in the San Antonio area will find this to be a resource for news and information on the field of law that governs the relationship people have with their jobs and with their employers. Although you may not hear about this area very much, it is more important than you might think. After all, we all need jobs, so employment law touches our daily lives even if we are not aware of it.

In fact, you can find employment law aspects in many news stories, even ones where you wouldn't expect to find them. Let's take celebrity gossip, for example. Although it might seem frivolous, there are often real legal issues underlying whatever headlines are making the supermarket checkout tabloids.

For example, Celine Dion was recently sued by a warehouse manager who was employed at the home she and her husband own in Florida. He alleges that the couple misclassified him as an "exempt employee" so that they would not have to pay him overtime for hours he worked past the 40-per-week limit. This is what is called a wage-and-hour dispute and it is by no means limited to people who work for celebrities. Employees in many industries need to be aware of how their employers are classifying them so that they are not missing out on overtime if it is due to them.

While employment law issues are pervasive in everyday life, that does not mean most people understand them. That's okay, because some lawyers make employment law their specialty and practice it exclusively or nearly exclusively. If you ever get into a situation where you are concerned that your employer is not being on the up-and-up with you, it would not be a bad idea to make an appointment with an employment law attorney and discuss the facts of your situation with him or her.
